There are several different types of ovarian cysts, and each has a different cause. Some of the most common causes of ovarian cysts include:
- Functional cysts: These cysts form as a result of the normal function of the ovary. They are the most common type of ovarian cyst, and typically disappear on their own within a few weeks to a few months.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): This is a condition in which the ovaries become enlarged and contain many small cysts. It is caused by an imbalance of hormones, and can also lead to irregular periods and difficulty becoming pregnant.
- Endometriomas: These cysts form when the tissue that lines the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus, and can attach to the ovary and form a cyst.
- Cystadenomas: These are benign cysts that develop from cells on the surface of the ovary. They can be filled with a watery or mucinous substance.
- Germ cell tumors: These rare cysts form from the cells that give rise to eggs. They can be benign or malignant.
It’s also worth noting that ovarian cyst can also appear without a clear cause and many cysts don’t cause any symptoms and may not require treatment. A cyst may be discovered during a routine pelvic exam or ultrasound. If you have any concerns about a cyst, it’s best to discuss them with your doctor.
